One year ago, my administration launched the No Worker Left Behind program to give 100,000 workers who have been hit hard by our changing economy the opportunity to get the college degree or job training they need to get new, good-paying jobs.
So here's how it works: for three years only, free training is available for workers who have lost their jobs or who are ready to advance beyond low-skill jobs. It's first come, first served. With training and certification through No Worker Left Behind, Michigan workers can get good-paying jobs and fill existing job openings in high-demand fields like nursing, or accounting, or auto mechanics.

Following months of hard work and great efforts by our economic development team, Dow Chemical, a great Michigan company of Midland, and Petrochemical Industries Company of Kuwait announced that they have chosen Michigan to locate the headquarters of their joint venture, K-Dow Petrochemicals, bringing 800 hundred jobs to our state.
This is going to be an $11 billion world-wide company. The fact that it will be headquartered here is terrific news for Michigan.
Along with Dow's decision to locate its new joint venture here, we were thrilled to announce ? 18 new jobs projects across Michigan that will create over 6,900 new jobs and involve over $231.2 million in new investment. A quick scan of these investments shows these new jobs are in our targeted 21st century hi-tech sectors including: alternative energy, life sciences, homeland security and defense, and advanced automotive manufacturing.

It's not every week that we make history in Michigan . . . it's not every day that we do something so monumental that it will be remembered for generations to come.
But this was one of those weeks and Wednesday was one of those days. Overlooking the beautiful blue waters of Lake Michigan, I signed into law historic new protections for the Great Lakes that mark a defining moment in our state's history and establishes Michigan as the nation's leader in the scientific management of water.

For more than five years, we have been focused on doing what we can to help citizens save money.
We were the first state in the nation to establish a prescription drug purchasing pool to help us get more for our money and offer citizens the MiRx card so they can get a discount on prescriptions, too..
We've sold state planes, we've reduced the number of vehicles in the state fleet, limited state employee travel, and eliminated bonuses. We've reduced energy consumption in state government, we've ended no-bid contracts ? all to ensure that we are being as frugal with your tax dollars as possible.
