This Labor Day, my family and I will join thousands of Michigan citizens who will run and walk across the Mackinac Bridge for the annual Bridge Walk event. We'll be celebrating the importance of fitness for Michigan families, and we'll be thinking about Michigan workers who have helped define our state and lead the labor movement across the country.
The Mackinac Bridge is - for me - a symbol of a great Michigan value: the value of hard work.

If you've seen or heard our ads featuring Jeff Daniels you know Michigan has great business success stories to share. But here's something more - these ads are generating new jobs for Michigan.
Just this week, a New York-based data management company, Business Intelligence Associates, chose Michigan for its newest location, committing $8 million that will create nearly 600 jobs here including 251 directly with the company. They

There used to be Today, Michigan faces a nursing shortage, a shortage that is expected to grow to some 18,000 nurses by 2015. And yet last year, 44 hundred qualified applicants were turned away from nursing programs in Michigan simply because there wasn't enough room for them.
And while thousands wait to enroll, hundreds more enter nursing programs only to encounter delays while they wait for an opportunity to complete their clinical requirements. The Michigan Nursing Corps purpose is to train new nurses and faculty.

Education in Michigan took a big step forward this week when I signed into law the new budget for our K-12 schools. Even in a year when we are making cuts in many areas of our state budget we were able to make new investments in education.
We know that investment in education pays dividends for everyone because it strengthens our economy and helps create the new jobs we need in Michigan.
That's why I am proud are increasing per pupil funding in our schools by up to $112 per student, with the biggest increases going to the schools that have been making do with less for years.

Almost six months ago in my State of the State address, I outlined how I will continue to go anywhere and do anything to bring jobs to Michigan. Our economic plan includes both short-term and long-term strategies, many of which we have already implemented thanks to bipartisan cooperation in Lansing.
For example, we have put in place the nation's most aggressive film incentive program to bring the movie-making industry and its good-paying jobs to Michigan; I have signed into law record funding for business marketing and tourism promotion; we now have a number of new and greater incentives to attract job-creating businesses ? just to name a few.
So this week, we moved forward on another of our plans to grow business and create jobs by announcing Invest Michigan! - a fund that will use $300 million, a large amount of capital but a small portion of our state pension fund, we're going to use this money to invest in businesses that create the jobs we need in Michigan.
