As gasoline prices continue to reach all-time highs, many of us are reevaluating our finances, especially as they relate to our driving habits. Some of us are considering carpooling, and combining several errands into one trip. Still others are using public transit options more and more frequently. That's music to our ears at TxDOT, where we play a big role in making sure that public transit through agencies such as the East Texas Council of Governments, or ETCOG, keeps rolling. To find out more, I spoke with Roxanne McKinley, ETCOG's Director of Transportation. Get more information about ETCOG's Rural Transit operations at 1-800-590-3371. Also this week in the Tyler District: SH 19 is set for Resurfacing in Henderson County; Work begins Monday on SH 19 and US 84 in Palestine; Pavement rehabilitation work continues on FM 756 or Paluxy Drive in Tyler; and TxDOT sets an incentive for work at Troup and the Loop. **Finally, announcing the Tyler District Blog. TxDOT's North Tyler Maintenance Section and the Special Jobs Crew apply an 'edge seal' to the shoulders of FM 16 near Winona. Edge seal helps preserve the edges of the pavement, which is the weakest part of any roadway, by sealing water out. The work is often done after crews have worked to repair the edges.

Beginning Monday, TxDOT maintenance crews are scheduled to begin resurfacing FM 2493 (Old Jacksonville Highway) between FM 2813 in Gresham and FM 346 in Flint. Weather permitting, the project is scheduled to last five days. Daytime lane closures will be in effect after 8 a.m. to allow for rush-hour traffic, but may be in place until sunset as the crew tries to complete the job in as few days as possible. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes if possible to avoid delays. Meanwhile, in Longview, the scheduled date for crews to return to the raised-medians project on Loop 281 in Longview has been moved to Tuesday, April 29. Crews will be performing resurfacing operations that are scheduled to last into June. This work constitutes the bulk of the remaining work on this project. Also, a quick look at other lane closures planned for this week and a project planned for downtown Palestine.

TxDOT's Rusk Maintenance Section rebuilds the inside edge of a curve on FM 839 near New Salem in Cherokee County. Crews dug out the failing edge and the area around it, back-filled it with hot mix and rolled it.

TxDOT's Henderson Maintenance Section and the Tyler District's Special Jobs Crew perform mill-and-inlay operations on US 259 north of Henderson. The mill machine grinds up worn pavement and shoots it into dump trucks, while fresh hot mix is being laid down in its wake.

As I've said in recent episodes, when the weather warms up, so does our work schedule, and the one big project that's been on hold since last year is back under way this week. In Tyler, construction crews are scheduled to return this week to work on the intersection of SH 110 and SE Loop 323, also known as Troup and the Loop, to pick up where the project left off last fall. Also, work scheduled for SH 110 in Whitehouse, a look at this week's mill-and-inlay and seal coat schedules, and a look at two upcoming projects.

At TxDOT, we spend a lot of time and money trying to keep water out of our roadways. We use operations like edge seal, seal coat, and hot mixing to waterproof a roadway's surface, which will help prolong the life of the pavement. When I started this podcast program two years ago, we were in the middle of a multi-year drought. When I conducted the following interview with Mike Reagan, the Tyler District's Maintenance Superintendent, it was one of my first for the podcast. Since it's been raining recently, and it looks like it could continue, I thought I'd let Mr. Reagan help us take a look back at 2006, and how the dry weather was affecting us then. Also this week in the Tyler District, a quick look at some planned lane-closure locations.

TxDOT's Canton Maintenance Section takes a detour from working on the highways to make sure Lake Tawakoni State Park's roads are in good shape before the spring and summer weather brings guests by the thousands. Hot mix is laid with a maintainer and rolled with rollers before being swept clean.

Before taking a look at the seal coat and Mill and inlay operations scheduled for this week, I wanted to take a minute to talk about the overpass construction on US 69 at FM 344 in Bullard. In Bullard, Construction crews have reduced US 69 to one lane in each direction around the FM 344 intersection so they can begin construction on temporary lanes for traffic during the construction of the overpass at that intersection. Construction of the temporary lanes will take approximately two weeks, weather permitting. We said last week that traffic from FM 344 will not be allowed to cross US 69, or turn left onto US 69 until the construction of the overpass is complete next summer, but our engineers have found a way to allow traffic to continue to fully use that intersection.

TxDOT's Jacksonville Maintenance Section overlays part of SH 42 south of Price. Adhesive oil is sprayed on the existing pavement, then LRA, a surface material applied cold is spread and rolled. The process is ideal for working in cold weather.
